Rookie Watch: The First Edition
The End Zone — on July 13, 2009 at 1:15 amInsidetheGridiron will be spotlighting four rookies during the 2009-2010 NFL Campaign. We will be giving you weekly updates and progress of each of these players throughout during the season!
New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez
Mark Sanchez was one of the most sought after prospects going into the NFL Draft. Sanchez, rumored to be drafted in the mid-first prior to the combine, ended up the fifth pick in the Draft. Sanchez possesses the skill set to be a big time quarterback in the NFL. From one big market on the West Coast to another on the East Coast, Sanchez will look to be the savior of the Jets organization.
San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree

Michael Crabtree was one of the top players on many team’s draft boards but a rumored horrible visit with the Cleveland Browns created questions about his character causing his stock to drop. After a questionable pick by the Raiders with Heyward-Bay at #7, Crabtree fell to the 49ers grasp at #10. The fans of San Francisco can rejoice because they now have a big play wide receiver and only hope Crabtree will make an impact like a previous 49er receiver.
Miami Dolphins CB Vontae Davis

Miami filled a huge void drafting Vontae Davis in the first round. Davis has been on the NFL radar since his freshman season at Illinois. Only 21 years of age, Davis is a rare athlete with an aggressive style of play. There are still questions about his erratic play and work ethic but with NFL coaching and maturity, Davis has the potential to be an elite cornerback.
Washington Redskins OLB/DE Brian Orakpo

Washington had a present delivered to their laps with Orakpo. The monsterous college defensive end will make the transition to OLB in the 4-3 Redskin Defense. It remains to be seen if Orakpo will be able to play on his feet at a high level but on rush downs Orakpo should benefit with the addition of DT Albert Haynesworth. Orakpo’s progress will be heavily monitored throughout the season.
